2021 Season Updates

August 2nd, 2021:

Good luck to the San Diego Stars who are representing the WBA at the NBC World Series this year. They open Thursday 8/5 against the Hutchison Monarchs at 4 pm PDT. In 2019, the last time the WBA sent teams, the Stars had a great run at the title finishing in 3rd place. All of us with the WBA wish them all the best!!

August 1st, 2021:

Congratulations on the Colton Nighthawks on winning the WBA Championship this season. In their first season in the league they finished with a record of 16-6 two games ahead of the San Diego Waves who finished 14-8. Great job by Ruben Montano and the Nighthawks!!

April 9th:

The 2021 league schedule is now complete, but has not been loaded on our Website or Pointstreak yet.  Hopefully, that will be done by the end of this month.  The league is at our strongest point in the last decade as we have added two quality programs (Colton Nighthawks and Solana Beach Redbirds) to make seven full-time members.  We have also added a top notch associate team (OC Juice) that will play part of the league schedule.  Everything is looking positive in returning to play this season following last summers cancellation. We will let everyone know when the league schedule is posted to our Website and Pointstreak. Thank you.

February 16th, 2021:

As we continue to plan for a summer season in 2021 the WBA is proud to announce that the Solano Beach Redbirds will be playing in the league this year. That gives us six teams in San Diego area and two out of county teams for a full schedule of games ahead of us. We are glad to have a quality program such as the Redbirds in the league! We hope to have a league schedule done within the next month and posted to Pointstreak.

December 4th, 2020

League Commissioner and Stars Manager/General Manager Passes Away:

September 24th, 2020

The Western Baseball Association is sad to announce the passing of Mickey Deutschman on Wednesday night at the age of 78. He was the WBA Commissioner for 22 years and manager of the the San Diego Stars for the last 36 years. Without Mickey D. there would have been no NBC Baseball in San Diego or much of Southern California. When the WBA was created in 1998 Mickey was named Commissioner right away and had remained in the role ever since. His San Diego Stars teams won the WBA Championship or WBA Southern Division Championship seven times in 22 years. At the NBC World Series his teams had three 5th place finishes and a 7th place finish before the WBA was formed. After the WBA was formed they finished 3rd twice and 5th place twice. His three crowing achievements at the NBC World Series were as follows:

One, beating the Hutch Broncos in 1984 whose roster included Barry Bonds, Pete Incaviglia and Rafeal Palmeiro. They finished 5th that year. Two, his squad in 1999, en route to a 3rd place finish, upset team USA to reach the Super Six. Three, in his final trip to the World Series 2019 the Stars finished in 3rd place for the second time in his career. What a way to finish his career!

This past March Mickey was selected to the NBC Baseball Hall of Fame, but due to Covid they did not announce it at this years Series as in years past. Mickey was a trailblazer in the Summer Ball community in Southern California and especially the San Diego Area. He was as old school as you can get in these days. He loved the game, loved his players and they loved him back. Mickey D will be missed by all who knew him. RIP Skip!
